If Mr. Assange is extradited to the United States, the consequences will reverberate for years around the world. Mr. Assange is not an American citizen, and none of his actions have taken place on American soil. If the United States can prosecute a journalist in these circumstances, the governments of Russia or China could, by the same logic, demand that foreign reporters anywhere on earth be extradited for violating their laws. The setting of such a precedent should deeply concern everyone, admirers of WikiLeaks or not.

le sigh.
I’ve just been to the library and was distracted for about 15 mins in the legal section of the ‘nook’ reserved for the UN and human rights literature.
Just like so many bitter medicines, it’s difficult to consume this critically engaging, performanced-based, normative literature knowing that THOUSANDS of academics, civil servants, state delegates working for international cooperation and peace has been perverted by a few who seised an opportunity during crisis in the name of nationalism and other bigotries, see Stephen Gill (2012) Global Crises and the Crisis of Global Leadership.
More than 140 countries have passed counterterrorism laws since the attacks of September 11, 2001, often with little regard for due process and other basic rights.
While every government has a responsibility to protect its population from attack, many have used the new measures to prosecute journalists, protesters, opposition politicians, and religious or ethnic groups under the guise of counterterrorism.
Why I continue to support President Obama.
My PhD supervisor has strong opinions on the death penalty. His convictions have urged me to review my own. One of the many signs of an outstanding mentor.
I have mixed feelings. And by mixed feelings, I mean I refuse to have a black and white stance on something I do not completely understand myself. I do believe that in almost all instances killing is wrong. I believe in all instances that killing the innocent is wrong. … hence my conflict. ‘i sit in judgement of you…’
HOWEVER. Obama is making the right move here. I commend him for it. THIS is the sort of President the United States needs! A president motivated by morality, yet grounded by reality, and above ALL - UNDERSTANDING, ACKNOWLEDGING, AND ABIDING (!!!!) TO INTERNATIONAL LAWS. This is the only way the United States, as a country - not a people - can have continued/renewed legitimacy in international politics and affairs.
we are one community, one country, one people. global.
until the rest of ‘America’ (and the world) sees this, there will be no peace.
viva revolution.
